I've been making more notebook covers as promised! :D

This one is for sale in my Etsy store here: www.etsy.com/listing/85455116/…

I've titled it the Enchanted Wood because it reminds me of the Faraway Tree series by Enid Blyton that I read over and over and over again in my childhood :D

I've decorated a spiral bound notebook with polymer clay, some glass cabochons, crystals, and metallic waxes and powders. The scene is reminiscent of the magical Faraway Tree... there are fantastic little details of glass centred flowers, golden vines, and little pink butterflies amongst the flowers and foliage.

This design is totally unique and will not be reproduced!

DIMENSIONS: 225 x 175mm (roughly A5 size). There are 100 double sided lined pages. The back cover has not been decorated, so it will stay flat when you set it down.

Do you use air drying clay or oven baked clay ? If so, do you just put the entire book inside ? x) I want to try to make one :D

Hi, I use oven baked clay. Specifically Fimo soft (because it's the cheapest, and I find it doesn't need a lot of conditioning before use). I create the clay cover seperately on a flat surface, then cure it in the oven, finish it off (with metallic paints etc), then attach to the book with industrial strength glue. I always outline the book cover on the flat surface to be sure I don't accidentally make it too big :) Thanks!

It's been crafted from polymer clay, and painted with a mix of metallic mica powders and varnish - to make a paste.

I'm not really sure. The great thing about polymer clay is that you can work on it a bit, leave it for several days, and then go back and do some more! All in all it probably took me a day or so (around 8 hours) to make, cure, finish off with the colours, and stick to the book.

Polymer clay isn't about making perfect shapes :) It's about making whatever shapes you can, and then doing stuff to them to make them pretty!! That's what I think, anyway :)

This is fantastic. I have just started using polymer clay but I am only an amature at the moment. I really hope that with practice I may be able to produce something even half as impressive as this.

At the moment I have only done a ltle jewellery, nothing fancy, just to get used to the mediumm as I have never attemted to sculpt in my life lol. A notebook cover is something I would have never even thought of as something to attempt.

You're right, it really does remind you of the Faraway Tree! Magical.

Thank you! :D

Polymer Clay is a fantastic and very versitile medium. The amount of things you can do with it is mind boggling!
(Unless it is being stubborn and all crumbly, like I've had the last few times I've sat down to make something. So frustrating!-.-')

I'd suggest you take a peek at Polymer Clay Daily for some inspiration! [link]

Happy creating :D

I've always been curious, but how do you bake all those clay pieces once you place them on the book? Wouldn't the notebook burn in the oven or catch fire?

Thanks, I get asked that a lot! I create the decorative cover seperately to the notebook (I trace the size of the cover to some baking paper, tape it to the table and work on that).

Once the decorative cover is cured (baked), I then fix it onto the notebook cover using industrial strength glue.

I know some people decorate the WHOLE cover. MandarinMoon is one of them, you should check out her work (see first comment). Hope that answers your question!

Yeah I knew it had to be one or the other.
I've also seen people baking polymer pens (I'm pretty sure they take the ink out first lol)

I really like the shimmery ethereal colors.
